The Last Lecture:
“When you do the right thing good stuff has a way of happening.” – Randy Pausch
A feedback loop is a process of getting feedback and responding to it.
The first time I heard about this concept was during The Last Lecture.
Constructive Criticism:
Do you know why constructive criticism is a thing? It’s because optimism supports effective communication.
Criticism is negative. It breaks people down, and it’s not well received.
But constructive criticism communicates with optimism. It helps people build, grow and develop.
That’s why it’s a thing.
Loop de Loop:
The idea of a mental health feedback loop is to feed ourselves constructively. It’s the process of using content to help us build, grow and develop.
It could be content that we’ve created or it could be content that we’ve engaged. For example, music, movie clips, motivational / inspirational sound bites…
The intention is that we’re building a “loop” of material that helps us be well.
Do You Have a Feedback Loop?:
I have a folder on my computer. It’s a collection of screenshots I’ve taken over the years.
When I create a piece of content that achieves noteworthy metrics, I take a screenshot.
If someone comments something positive on one of my posts, I take a screenshot.
There’s a screenshot of the first check I earned as the owner of Respect Your Gift and screenshots of encouraging messages people have sent me.
Initially the screenshots were taken to capture a memory – eventually they became part of my mental health feedback loop.
The files on my computer are inspiring and encouraging. I also use my social media profiles in a similar way: My likes consist of content that entertains and motivates.
Use Your Resources:
You have resources and a feedback loop is one of them.
Feed yourself with constructive content that helps you take care and do the right thing…
Remember, “when you do the right thing good stuff has a way of happening”.
